With only weeks left in Joe Biden’s term and Democrat control of the Senate, Democrats are trying to make their move to reshape the court.
As I have told you guys many times, you simply cannot trust Joe Manchin, and he proved it again.
Senator Manchin (I-W.V.) has teamed up with Senator Peter Welch (D-VT) to sponsor legislation to limit the number of years a Supreme Court justice can serve.
One Last Chance
The Supreme Court has a very low approval rating right now, but that is more about Democrats and the media than it is the court.
Every time a ruling comes down that does not favor Democrats, the media starts crying that the sky is falling and changes need to be made to the court.
Manchin, who is about to retire, wants to get one last dig in for Democrats.
He stated, “The current lifetime appointment structure is broken and fuels polarizing confirmation battles and political posturing that has eroded public confidence in the highest court in our land.
“Our amendment maintains that there shall never be more than nine Justices and would gradually create regular vacancies on the Court, allowing the President to appoint a new Justice every two years with the advice and consent of the United States Senate.”
Now, I could be wrong, but I don’t ever recall anyone worrying about the length justices served before Donald Trump appointed three justices to the court.
It also happens to be a time when three of the oldest justices on the court are all conservatives.
Senator Welch added his two cents, stating, “Setting term limits for Supreme Court Justices will cut down on political gamesmanship, and is commonsense reform supported by a majority of Americans.”
I don’t know about you, but I would much rather see legislation put on the floor for congressional term limits.
As far as justices go, if they are mentally capable, they can do the job, so let’s mandate mental testing rather than kicking them off the bench after a certain number of years.
Meanwhile, let’s move those fossils out of Congress.
