A case is about to be before the Supreme Court that could have some major repercussions in the social media world.

When Donald Trump was in office, he floated the idea of banning TikTok, and he was ridiculed for it.

The Democrats then came around and passed legislation to make it happen, but now the Supreme Court is being asked to block the law that would effectively ban TikTok in the United States.

Block It

I can still remember when Trump said TikTok was a national security threat and he was literally laughed at.

Toward the end of his term, however, Dems started to come around.

Legislation was eventually crafted and passed to ban TikTok in the United States, and that law goes into effect just before Trump’s inauguration.

For some reason, Donald Trump now has a soft spot for TikTok, so he is trying to play savior for the app when he was the person who started this movement.

With the legislation about ready to go into effect, TikTok is asking the Supreme Court to block the ban.

TikTok’s attorneys are arguing, “The Act will shutter one of America’s most popular speech platforms the day before a presidential inauguration.

“This, in turn, will silence the speech of Applicants and the many Americans who use the platform to communicate about politics, commerce, arts, and other matters of public concern.”

The company is owned by China-based ByteDance, and the current law would require the company to be sold or it would be blocked.

I have seen reports of Trump possibly brokering a deal that would keep the app active, but if it does go dark, it will have a significant impact on influencers in this country.

With the clock ticking, we will continue to keep an eye on this for further developments.
