The FBI had a sickening program in place from 2016 to 2019.
The program, which started under Director James Comey and continued for two years under Director Wray, was stripping a constitutional right away from Americans.
Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) exposed how nasty and sickening the tactics being used were.
When someone is mentally incapable of handling a weapon responsibly, most would agree they should not have a gun.
The question is who makes that call?
The FBI launched a program in 2016 that actually put the onus of deciding that on the alleged mentally challenged individual.
The agency touted it as a program that encouraged self-reporting, but that is not what was happening here.
In reality, the FBI was seeking out people that may have made a threatening post online.
Now, I am not talking about someone that was clearly deranged, but a post that they made out of anger or frustration.
Then the FBI would knock on the door and offer them the opportunity to sign their Second Amendment rights away.
At least 15 people fell for the ploy.
For an unknown reason (but I think most of us have a pretty good idea), the program was ended in 2019.
Senator Paul raised a great question, stating, “There is a certain irony to saying to someone you have to be mentally competent to sign this statement that says you’re not mentally competent to have a gun.
“So, there is that that might be a quandary if you get into a court of law.
“How someone that’s mentally incompetent to own a gun could be competent to sign away their gun rights.”
This is yet another strike against an agency that is already struggling with public perception.
The fact that Wray allowed this program to continue for two years needs to be addressed with him sitting in the hot seat before Congress.
