In a scene that we can expect to see repeated across hundreds of Democrat-Socialist run cities, states, and counties: approximately fifty officers and sergeants of the Portland Police Bureau have tendered their resignation from the PPB’s “specialized crowd control unit”, essentially their riot police, known as the Rapid Response Team on Wednesday, June 16th. This move came a day after Officer Corey Budworth, a member of the unit was indicted on charges of fourth-degree assault for striking a rioter with a baton during the 180 Day string of riots, arson, and lawlessness that plagued America last summer. It was an indictment that was driven by the ever-worsening anti-police rhetoric of the Democrat-Socialists who’ve taken over the Pacific Northwest.

According to reports, an as-yet-unnamed Lieutenant called Chief Chuck Lovell and informed him of the resignation on Wednesday night, and explained that the indictment against Budworth was the final straw following months of a “perceived lack of support from City Hall and from the district attorney”

Deputy Chief Chris Davis, serving as Acting Chief while Chief Lovell is in Florida on training told OregonLive,

“Have I ever seen anything like this in my career? No, I don’t think any of us have,”

We’re going to see a whole lot more of it if this Defund The Police shtick keeps up. Bet on it.

The Police Union Called Out The Dangerous Rhetoric in October

In an October letter, The President of the Portland Police Association Daryl Turner sent a letter to embattled Mayor Ted Wheeler who is currently serving as Police Commissioner as well. The Union President urged Wheeler and Police Chief Lovell to “stand up and publicly support Police Bureau members who voluntarily serve on the Rapid Response Team (RRT).” and “stop using RRT members as political pawns,”. He pointed out that the team was “exhausted and injured.” and that the only glue holding them together was their “commitment to serve their city.”

“Our RRT members do not volunteer to have Molotov cocktails, fireworks, explosives, rocks, bottles, urine, feces, and other dangerous objects thrown at them,”

wrote Turner, adding “Nor do they volunteer to have threats of rape, murder and assaults on their families hurled at them. They do not volunteer to suffer serious injuries, to be subjected to warrantless criticism and face allegations by elected officials, or to suffer through baseless complaints and lengthy investigations devoid of due process.”

Check out this video from The Oregonian which shows a bicycle officer being mercilessly sucker-punched off his bike and beaten on the ground after gently pushing past rioters.

Turner hammered home that the officers of the RRT do not receive any specialty pay for the extra work that they’re doing. He further insisted that the Officers in Charge must be allowed to determine the best tactics for protecting the city and containing riots, “not politicians”, and that internal use-of-force investigations must be timely, just as offenders are entitled to an expedient trial.

These officers find themselves in a no-win situation. They are told to stand down and only intervene when things have gotten so out of control that they have no other option than to use high levels of force to regain control of unlawful demonstrations,” Turner wrote.

“They are criticized for their perceived inaction on the front end and are criticized for their inevitable use of force on the back end. They can’t win because of the position others have put them in.’’

And we’re seeing this unfold all over the country, Police are held back from doing their jobs, forced to use more force than would’ve been needed had they acted sooner and then vilified, fired, and defunded after. It is an inevitable recipe for a breakdown of civil society and leads straight to where the leftists want: Federalized policing.
