The acquittal of Michael Sussmann in the high profile special Russiagate investigation has John Durham scrambling to defend the rest of his probe. He’s under intense pressure to wrap it up. Of course, all of that heat is coming from the Democrat side of the aisle.
Durham digs in
John Durham is rumored to be digging in and getting ready for bigger battle, yet to come. He was soundly defeated by the Democrats in the Sussmann case but the war isn’t anywhere close to being over.
A point to note is that even though Merrick Garland is being hammered to close the special prosecution, our Attorney General isn’t signaling he might be interested in doing that.
Larry Tribe, described by left-leaning Politico as “a liberal legal scholar and Harvard professor,” thinks “it’s time for Garland to circumscribe the Durham boondoggle both temporally and topically.”
Circumscribe means put a pen around him. By the rest of it, the professor means gag him and shut him down now. He’s certainly not the kind of professor one would want to be stranded on an island with.
“The Durham roadshow has expended far too much of the taxpayers’ money with precious little to show for it,” he whines.
The probe “needs to be wound down in an orderly fashion. Enough already!” Shut it down quick before they find something really damning.
The power to pull the plug
Trump hating lawyer George Conway is also demanding that Garland pull the Durham investigation plug. He hopes “it’s headed into the trash can because it should be.”
“The Justice Department should put an end to this.” He means Garland specifically. “As attorney general he has under the regulations, he has the power to say that’s enough.”
In fact, Conway adds, “he has the obligation to do it if he thinks that Durham is on a frolicking detour, which I think he is.” Oh, so George Conway’s opinion is all that counts. One sided justice is perfectly acceptable.
“I think the reason it hasn’t been done already was for the simple reason they didn’t want the political blowback of people saying: cover up, cover up.”
Everyone on team Durham is still in shock. They thought for sure they had the case sewn up tight, even with a mostly Democrat jury. “Everything just kind of fell apart,” former federal prosecutor Andrew McCarthy points out.
Everyone is speculating that “the courtroom defeat would distract from Durham’s broader findings about actions Democrats took to publicize the Trump-Russia allegations and about the FBI’s handling of those claims.” Stay tuned, and we’ll all find out together.
