Congress Threatens to Step in Over DC Crime Rates

The District of Columbia’s alleged mayor, Muriel Bowser, is doing such a horrible job of preventing crime that Congress may have to step in and do it for her. Things haven’t been this bad since former D.C. Mayor Marion Barry went to prison for smoking crack.

Congress issues warning

Republicans on the House Judiciary and Oversight committees sent a warning flag up on June 30, about the “exploding crime rate in the District of Columbia.” That city is special because it’s our nation’s capitol.

If Mayor Bowser doesn’t take a big bite out of crime, Congress can, and will, intervene. In just the past year, crime has spiked by a whopping 11 percent. She can’t even blame deplorable insurrectionists because they don’t count in the past year’s statistics.

According to conservative Kentucky lawmaker James Comer, “all Americans should feel safe in their capital city, but radical left-wing policies have enabled rampant crime in the District of Columbia.

He happens to be the top GOP watchdog on the Oversight Committee. “Mayor Bowser must be held accountable for not taking the actions needed to restore order in our nation’s capital and ensure the safety of all citizens who live in or visit D.C.” Congress can provide that accountability.

Over at the Judiciary Committee, popular Ohio conservative Jim Jordan has Comer’s back. They teamed up on Thursday to write a little note to Mayor Bowser “demanding a briefing on the city’s efforts to combat crime.” They want answers and they want them now.

Before they have to get the rest of Congress in on it too. “For over a year, Republicans have raised concerns about D.C.’s soaring crime and deteriorating conditions,” they wrote.

Action to restore order

Someone was nice enough to leak a copy of the letter to the Washington Times. “The D.C. government, however, has ignored all requests for information.

It is past time you take action to restore order to the nation’s capital,” the concerned lawmakers wrote. Congress will take whatever action it takes if Mayor Bowser can’t or won’t hold up her end of the public safety bargain.

There’s a disturbing trend in the data that the members of congress think that the mayor can help them get their heads around.

For some strange reason, the “rise in bloodshed has correlated with the ascendance of the defund the police movement and other far-left causes.” Causes which were fully embraced by “the District’s political leadership.”

It’s no wonder that the right-side of congress has decided to haul Mayor Bowser over the coals. The district’s Attorney General, Karl Racine decided to make the job easier for police by decriminalizing crime.

In the name of “restorative justice” he refuses to prosecute anyone underprivileged for things like shoplifting, carjacking, or murder. “This weak response will only ensure people visiting, living, or working in D.C. continue to be endangered,” the lawmakers wrote.
