She’s Retiring, Dems Caught Off Guard

From the projections I have seen, Democrats are likely to take back the House, while the GOP is likely to take the Senate.

This is going to make the New Democrat Coalition (NDC or New Dems) more powerful than ever in the House, but there is a problem for Democrats.

The current chair of the group, Rep. Annie Kuster (D-N.H.), is retiring, so Dems are going to have to find a moderate leader in their caucus that can work with Republicans.

Not the Norm

In this age of politics, having someone who is a true moderate and capable of dealing with the other side of the aisle is a rarity.

While you may not know Kuster’s name, she was very instrumental in working across the aisle on House legislation over the last two years.

The two leading candidates to take the position are Reps. Sharice Davids (D-KS) and Rep. Brad Schneider (D-IL), with Davids really making a strong play.

Davids stated, “Even as a coalition that’s in the minority, I think that actually highlights that when we prioritize getting things done and collaboration, not just within our coalition, but when we can find areas to work with our Republican colleagues on, we’re going to be pragmatic and do that.”

She continued, “Coming from a red state and having been through tough elections every two years since getting elected, and serving during that time as the vice chair of member services … I have really had the chance to hear from and work with almost all of our members to just help figure out what they need to be successful in the Congress, and also what they need to be successful on the campaign side.”

All of the infighting during the last two years has really hurt Republicans, so don’t be surprised when Democrats take control of the House.

The good news is that the GOP should take back the Senate, but that majority could be short-lived if Trump raids Congress for cabinet members.

We are getting a bit ahead of ourselves, however, as Trump needs to take back the White House first.
