When the vast majority of us were children, we all had chores of some kind.
I grew up in northern Michigan, so in the wintertime, one of my big chores was shoveling snow. In the summer it became mow the lawn.
All year round, I did the vacuuming and would run the dishwasher. Simple stuff I would say.
Regular chores is one of those things that when kids have to do them, it sort of prepares you for the idea that when you are grown up that you are going to have to do it all by yourself.
That’s one of the things that I realized pretty quickly when I had the first place I had on my own. Simple one bedroom apartment that had I not had the upbringing that I did I probably would have turned that place into a disaster area.
Besides, one thing about doing regular chores as a kid is they help you get used to having to do things on a schedule. I know plenty of people now whose kids are getting their first jobs and getting into all kinds of trouble because they were never made to regularly do household chores.
They end up showing up to work late because they were never taught the importance of being on a schedule of any kind.
However, there are some people that do things a little differently but still get to the right destination.
A mother named Sam Kelly has been making waves online for a very strange approach to assigning chores to her kids.
Where most kids are asked to help with chores, she doesn’t do that.
Now, don’t start getting upset, she’s actually on to something here. What she does instead is ask them to help with her work around the house.
It’s actually a pretty interesting way of getting into the heads of her kids that it does actually take a lot of work to maintain a house.
It also stresses the idea that making sure a house is in working order is a team effort that everyone should be involved in around the house.
