It looks like the Biden administration is starting to dig in for the impending impeachment of Secretary Mayorkas.
Reports have surfaced that DHS has secured the services of the law firm Debevoise & Plimpton.
This, of course, would be in anticipation of the GOP House impeaching Mayorkas.
Payback
The hiring of this firm was actually fairly predictable for two reasons.
First, the firm also represented Democrats during the Donald Trump impeachment hearings.
Second, the firm has lined the pockets of Democrats fairly heavily over the last two elections.
A whopping 95 percent of all donations during the 2022 cycle were directed to Democrats ($289,000).
During the 2020 cycle, members of the firm wrote checks for more than $1 million that went to Democrats, with $245,000 finding its way to Joe Biden’s campaign.
That is more or less a down payment for legal services secured.
David O’Neil will serve as attorney if needed, with Anna Moody and Carter Burwell on deck to come aboard if things get serious.
The contract is worth up to $3 million for the firm, with $1.5 on the table for the first year and another $1.5 on the table through 2025, which would be the end of Biden’s first term.
DHS defended the hiring stating that the firm will “help ensure the department’s vital mission is not interrupted by the unprecedented, unjustified and partisan impeachment efforts by some members of Congress, who have already taken steps to initiate proceedings.
“DHS will continue prioritizing its work to protect our country from terrorism, respond to natural disasters, and secure our borders while responding appropriately to the over 90 Congressional committees and subcommittees that have oversight of DHS.”
