Donald Trump has started to name his administration appointments.
Overall, I think most Republicans are happy, but there are a few that stand out as questionable.
Atop that list for many is Matt Gaetz as the attorney general.
Getting Derailed
Gaetz resigned his seat in the House as soon as his appointment was named, which caught a lot of people off guard.
After the fact, it was reported that the House Ethics Committee was about to release its report on the Gaetz investigation.
As a matter of fact, the committee was slated to meet on Friday to decide whether to publicly release its findings.
However, with Gaetz resigning his seat, there are now calls from some Republicans to bury the report since he is no longer in the House.
I believe that is a mistake because there is nothing in that report that will not eventually get out anyway.
I know a lot of MAGA want Gaetz in that role, but think of the harm it could do to Trump and the conservative movement if we eventually find out that the allegations of Gaetz paying prostitutes and having sex with minors are true.
If he truly has nothing to hide, then he should not fear the outcome of the report.
I would prefer to protect the Trump presidency and the movement over Gaetz’s career, so I say, at the very least, the Senate Judiciary Committee, which will vet Gaetz during the nomination process, should see that report.
Gaetz is already facing an uphill battle, with a handful of Republican Senators already pushing back on the nomination.
Getting cleared by this report could go a long way toward helping him, or if the report does reveal something, it will eliminate him now rather than embarrassing Trump a year or so down the road.
