I have had plastic containers in my house for as long as I can remember.
Growing up, I was of the generation where I remember my mom either going to or hosting a Tupperware party.
For the past several decades we have thought that plastic was the way to go for pretty much everything. In a way, it was.
The problem is that we really didn’t understand the implications of using plastic for everything.
Look at it this way, say you made a big pot of spaghetti for dinner.
After everyone has their fill you suddenly realize that you have some left over. So you toss it into a plastic food storage tub and leave it in the fridge.
About three in the morning, you can’t sleep and you get really hungry. You pull that tub out and zap it in the microwave for a minute or two.
No harm no foul right? Wrong. It’s actually one of the worst things that you could do for your body.
Think about it. Have you noticed that in the decades since we started using plastics on a large scale for food storage the number of cancers and assorted illnesses have skyrocketed?
A lot of it is due to the way we reheat food.
Like I said, we have no problem putting things in a plastic bowl and reheating them. Shoot, you really think the microwave-safe plastic bowls are really microwave safe?
BPA is one of the chemicals that is used in the production of most plastics. It’s relatively harmless except when it is ingested.
So every single time you microwave something in a plastic bowl, these chemicals seep into your food a little at a time.
Over time, this chemical fills up in your body and is thought to be one of the main causes of many of the illnesses that has been skyrocketing in recent decades.
That being said, if you have plastic bowls under no circumstances use them for reheating.
Heck, I wouldn’t even store things in plastic. The good safe bet is always to buy some ceramic or glass storage containers.
It’s only your health, ya know.
