A corrupt Democrat leader has been found dead after fighting Stage 4 pancreatic cancer for two years. After keeping up with a packed schedule of public appearances between medical treatments for almost two years, Florida Representative Alcee Hastings, 84, had recently been moved to hospice care.
Corruption Allegations
Despite attempts by his fellow Democrats and the mainstream media to claim that Hastings was a “crusading civil rights lawyer,” reports show that he had been impeached and removed from his position as a federal judge prior to joining Congress.
According to reporting by the South Florida Sun Sentinel, Hastings had been “indicted on charges of conspiring to solicit a $150,000 bribe from an FBI agent posing as a racketeer trying to buy his way out of a prison sentence” in 1981.
Six years after the jury found Hastings not guilty in 1983, Congress concluded that he had lied during his criminal trial. Following that conclusion, the House impeached the corrupt Democrat, and the Senate convicted him on eight of the 11 articles of impeachment. Hastings was removed from the bench, but the Senate chose not to disqualify him from holding future office.
Of course, the corruption didn’t end there. Soon after the #MeToo movement began to gain steam in 2017, it was uncovered that the U.S. Treasury Department had paid $220,000 of taxpayer money to settle sexual misconduct allegations made by a staffer against Hastings. To make matters worse, the corrupt Democrat also came under investigation two years later for breaking House rules by having a relationship with a different staffer.
The House Ethics Committee released a statement about the allegations against Hastings, which read:
“The Committee is aware of public allegations arising out of Representative Alcee Hastings’ personal relationship with an individual employed in his congressional office. On May 14, 2019, the Committee, pursuant to Committee Rule 18(a), began an investigation regarding the allegations. The Committee is specifically considering whether Representative Hastings’ relationship with the individual employed in his congressional office is in violation of House Rule XXIII, clause 18(a), and whether Representative Hastings has received any improper gifts, including any forbearance, from that employee. The Committee continues to gather additional information regarding the allegations.”
Determining the date of the special election to fill Hastings’ seat will be the responsibility of Florida’s Republican Governor Ron DeSantis. The seat will likely be filled by another Democrat, as Florida’s 20th District has a significant Democrat majority. According to the South Florida Sun Sentinel, Joe Biden won the district by 79.8% of the vote in the 2020 election.
