The city of New York has been deeply embedded in a corruption investigation for months.
Ironically, the investigation appeared to start after New York City Mayor Eric Adams started to push back against Joe Biden’s immigration policies.
Well, the hammer has fallen and Mayor Adams has just been indicted.
Revenge or Crime
There is a lot to digest here, so let’s get to it.
First, numerous officials in the Adams administration have had their homes and offices raided, as well as their devices captured by federal authorities.
The suspicion has been that Adams was taking foreign donations, apparently from Turkey, to boost his campaign fundraising numbers.
Those donations then enabled him to take advantage of the match policy, giving him far more election funds than he should have been entitled.
Adams, of course, maintains his innocence.
I have seen some reports that say this is being blown out of proportion, however, due to Adams pushing back against the Biden immigration policies, suggesting the “scandal” is all about revenge for Biden and his DOJ.
Before the charges were announced, Adams again proclaimed his innocence, stating, “My fellow New Yorkers, it is now my belief that the federal government intends to charge me with crimes.
“If so, these charges will be entirely false, based on lies. But, they would not be surprising.”
Then the charges were announced, with the indictment stating, “As Adams’s prominence and power grew, his foreign-national benefactors sought to cash in on their corrupt relationships with him, particularly when, in 2021, it became clear that Adams would become New York City’s mayor.”
Now, to be clear, I would not be surprised if Adams is guilty, but at the same time, I would wager that if you dug into most politicians’ campaign funding, you would find some foreign money.
Yet, the two Democrats who have found themselves under investigation by the DOJ are the Democrats who were the most outspoken against Biden: Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) and Adams.
So, make of that what you will.
