The Republic of Dagestan in Russia recently became the site of a shocking incident as video footage showing mobs of people storming the airport is going viral. The footage shows people waving the Palestinian flag and shouting “Allahu Akbar” over reports of Israeli citizens making their way into the country.
This was followed by members breaking down doors and demanding staff members to give them the location of Israelis.
On Tuesday evening, October 24 at 7:17 p.m., local time, a flight from Tel Aviv landed at Makhachkala’s airport, which sparked protests among mob members who had been alerted through a Telegram channel. The crowd then charged through the lobby and made their way to the tarmac where they attempted to board a small plane.
One man was allegedly targeted as a suspected Jew, and ordered to hand over his passport. He claimed he was Uzbek but some were not satisfied with his answer.
Additionally, signs were held up reading “Child killers have no place in Dagestan” and “We are against Jewish refugees”. Reports also indicate that cars outside the airport were stopped and drivers’ personal information checked by mob members.
This disturbing event has caused controversy amongst many individuals including those in surrounding countries such as Israel and Russia itself. On one side there are those who believe this sort of behavior should never be tolerated regardless of political views or beliefs. On another end there are those who feel this action is justified due to what they consider oppressive policies towards Palestinians by Israeli authorities.
