On Thursday, November 9, U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) make an unexpected announcement. In a video posted online, Manchin revealed that he will not be running for re-election for the U.S. Senate.
This sets the stage for a broader initiative to unify America, and has many Republicans hoping for a gain in the Senate.
Manchin is a moderate Democrat who often crosses party lines, favoring conservative policies in his home state of West Virginia – particularly on issues like energy and environment. His departure opens up an opportunity for the GOP to gain control of the Senate, as West Virginia has been trending more Republican in recent elections.
Manchin reflected on how he got into public service 40 years ago after an argument with his father about self-service versus public service. In his statement on X, Manchin recalled his father’s message of public service, serving not just himself but all people regardless of friend or foe.
He noted President John F Kennedy’s famous call to action “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country” as being his guiding light throughout his career.
Despite facing criticism from both sides due to his moderate stances, Manchin maintained that “the fight to unite has been well worth it”.
He also noted positive developments taking place within West Virginia such as increased investment opportunities and job growth over recent decades–though at the same time acknowledged there are still many challenges facing America today including economic hardship, public safety concerns and foreign policy issues which must all be addressed sooner rather than later.
Manchin concluded with a reflection on American politics and called out “the growing divide between Democrats and Republicans [that] is paralyzing Congress and worsening our nation’s problems” before announcing that he will now pursue another term outside of Congress: traveling around the country speaking out about creating a movement towards unifying Americans together.
